Before the fork, when I have spent some Bitcoin to buy drugs or computer parts or whatever, I always made sure top up back up to the same amount of bitcoins held. I had to send fiat to exchange and fill someone's buy order to get that topup. If a lot of new people are doing this, then that is a lot of buy orders getting filled on the exchanges. Which drives up the price.
