I believe you just have to go into the files and grab a .dat file and upload it after upgrading the wallet so you can send the coins where you want them.
I had to do this last year.

Other wallets are plain text, I'm confused how you to insert a binary into a plain text file.

Ok.. Grab that file and set it aside, just copy paste it somewhere.
Then update or reinstall a new wallet.
Next copy the old .dat file into the new file for the updated or reinstalled wallet program.
launch the program and let it update and rebuild the ledger.

You may have to move it to another computer sometimes the filesystems do something weird and become corrupted and the old wallets won't update. Which is pretty much your problem now.

Right.. I think he needs to try core wallets for LTC and BTC. I had the same problem with LTC core with coins from 2014.

Stop Bitcoin Core
Replace wallet.dat in the Bitcoin data directory with your old backup.
Restart Bitcoin Core
