I work 7-8 months out of the year as a contractor, sometimes more..pulling around 110-130K a year in that time. It's pretty intense and you're on the road but it's good money.
The rest of the time I read, play music, learn new subjects, do projects around the house and take care of myself way better than is possible on the road... I trade everyday or at least watch the markets..
People can't stand it when you do life on your terms and watching them seethe is very satisfying.

that's if you're lucky. If you're an upper middle class boomer chances are that your life was spent working 10 hour days for a corporation and your achievements were simply having a family and saving money for your corporation.

Have you ever actually worked with post-neets/autusts? They have meltdowns at even the implication of change or conflict. They over analyze every conversation and at the same time can’t even look you in the eyes when talking to you. I get asked these same questions every week. I think most people just can't fathom having so much time alone. They ask things like "aren't you bored? I would be so bored, I need to be around people or I'll go crazy!" because they've never experienced more than a few days of isolation in their entire lives. When I first became a NEET I was scared I'd end up losing my mind or something, but it only made me realize how insane the wagies lifestyle is. It's like leaving a cult, I had to spend years deprogramming myself from it all.

You know, I used to think this when I was 20, but I’m 33 now and I’ve fully decided finding things to get over “boredom” doesn’t sound like much if a hurdle compared to getting up at 6 am every day six days a week and working my ass off while my house falls apart around me because I’m too tired to fix it, and too poor to pay to have it fixed.

I had four days off to just stay at home, clean up a few things, slept in every day, drank coffee all day and played Vidya I haven’t had time for in three fucking years.

Possibly the best four days of my recent life, I think killing some boredom would be a welcome challenge at this point.

All for this, imagine how late I could sleep in if I didn’t have to give up half of my paycheck for murderous, drug dealing refugees to move into in my neighborhood.

Full-time employment is a double edged sword. On one hand you make more money, but on the other you spend more paying someone else to do shit you could do yourself if you had more time.

I think it's learned helplessness. Like the elephant and the wood stake. I'm the self-taught type and learned most by books. Managed even to ace my lectures just reading the script and never attending. Many friends however complain about not knowing what to do. I also think this is why gaming along quest markers got so popular - they love getting told what to do step by step.

Having my first kid later this year, going to be the primary care giver, going part time to do that.
