1gb blocks were already sustainable with average hardware a couple of years ago. With 5g networks available 4gb blocks will be in the same position.
It was never about 4gb blocks being unsustainable for core, it was the need for VC capital to solve problems that don't need to be there in the first place, which is why they wouldn't even double the block size and they DELIBERATELY slowed down development of next-gen optimization such as xthinner compression and Graphene.
Yes, 1GB blocks don't work on the BTC network, but with uncrippled development, they would pretty well on BCH (if those optimisations are actively used).
