Development may noy be dead, but it's not needed. Eventually ETH will do everything it can do and more. It's a gamble, a risky one.

I be honest, my knowledge of Ethereum is limited, but the project looks like it has real potential, it could take services like YouTube and Uber and just about any Web service with a centralised authority (all of them) and make them decentralised, cutting out the middle man. Unlike with YouTube where the owners push a political agenda, a decentralised YouTube would have nobody at the top, so no agenda and no middle man. Same for Uber, no middle man taking a wet bite out of the transaction for hooking the driver and the customer up. And ETH is the currency of the platform so having it is the way to gain a stake. But correct me if I'm wrong, like I said my knowledge is superficial.
