He regretted it because of the harassment and bullying and attacks on him after he confirmed that Craig had proven to him he is Satoshi. He was deeply hurt by all these attacks, but I think he was more hurt because Craig left him for the wolf. And if you think about it, it is the second time Craig leave him alone to be eaten alive. The first time was when Craig (as Satoshi) abruptly left him to lead the Bitcoin project.
