I work in academia and fortunately we have full autonomy and don't have to deal with managers. I unironically enjoy doing all the work out takes to put a research paper together -- gathering data, doing statistical analyses and writing the results. If my job was just to tell others what to do I'd probably feel empty and depressed and would want to kms.
