Debt never needs to be paid off.
Individual bonds do, but they can be paid with the revenue created from issuing and selling new ones.
Its called debt rollover or smth.
The only thing that does need to be paid is the interest on debt.
You can also pay that by issuing new debt but you have to be careful, if you issue to much new debt people will be less willing to buy it, you will have to entice them by giving them a higher yield on the bonds you issue.
If you give them a higher yield though, you will have to pay more interest and thus will likely have to issue even more debt at even higher yields to entice even more people to buy your bonds.
This can spiral out of control.
The only line of defense to keep this from happening is selling foreign reserves (mostly consisting out of gold for the US and europe, mostly consisting out of dollars for the rest of the world) instead of issuing new bonds at higher yields.
In order for this to work those foreign reserves need to be substantial in comparison to your debt. This usually isnt the case so a debt spiral leads to a loss of confidence in the underlying currency with a massive drop (stag or hyperinflation)
When this happens, all of a sudden your foreign reserves become very valuable compared to your debt and you can stop issuing debt and start selling foreign reserves.
Even the sheer possibility of this can calm the markets.

See 1970's for the US, yields skyrocketed to 14%, but gold skyrocketed 25-fold till the foreign reserves of the US was 25% of the debt.

Figure it out dipshit it's already really obvious. Or you can keep trading whatever currency your using for more euros and yuans like the other guy.
