Don't be too hard on yourself. Buying it from an exchange back then was taking a leap of faith sending scans of your personal documents to some sketchy looking bank in the seychelles. Mining was off putting too. You could make 1 btc a month with a modest setup, but you have to remember that that was $3 and seemed as pointless as mining does now at the time.
