They are barely profitable with many of them earning low single digit percentage profit when the economy is good (apparently most airlines still can't cover their cost of capital even if they are profiting), and when whatever downturn occur or special incident hit the travel demand they will lose big money and many airlines will be bankrupt, even large airlines cannot immune to the process if you recall the past history for many different airlines.
