For our entire existence humans have operated in the understanding that more resources = better. The idea that we have to radically change that sentiment is simply too much of a shock to many people's brains, who aren't capable of making a radical change like that, so they invent a story that makes the problem temporarily go away.

its not new and its hasnt been caused or accelerated by human hands, thus the solution is also out of human hands, the world was unironically warmer in the fucking 30s (the dust bowl did nothing wrong) and has been massively heating up and cooling FASTER than it is just now in the past.
