FTM is a token on the ETH blockchain, so right now it's an ERC20 token. But this ERC20 is just a temporary placeholder because the mainnet is not yet live. As soon as the mainnet goes live, the ERC20 tokens are usually exchanged for the real FTM token and burned. What "burned" means is that the ERC20 tokens are sent to a "burn address" in the ETH smart contract itself that basically destroys the token. It's like the team is giving you a voucher that can be redeemed once for FTM as soon as the mainnet goes live. Hope that makes sense?

Not him, but Ethereum has hit mainstream adoption already. Samsung, Microsoft, Amazon, and others. Crypto has nothing to do with whos tech is the best. It is all speculation, until a certain level of awareness is reached, then all that matters at that point is adoption, which is the hardest part to achieve. Corporations will use Ethereum because it has already proven itself worthy of their trust. Not to mention they are going from a financial system that takes hours to days, over to Ethereum which takes minutes(and soon to be seconds with 2.0). Fees have gone from a few dollars, to a few cents. On top of that its a contract system that is 100% deterministic, trustless, and hundreds of thousands of dollars cheaper than the salaries of the people it replaces. Im not saying Fantom isnt better tech. What I am saying is, the benefits Fantom offers dont really matter until you end up with a system millions and millions times larger than the one they are aiming for. A system which is already covered by a trusted, functional solution that is already being adopted as the standard. Fantom will be the Sega Dreamcast of the smart contract world.
