Duh.
The white paper says that the mining is done by exchanging messages and confirming, through voting, what the next block is over the network, which is done almost entirely over the internet without any hard calculations on phones. Instead, members of the network vouch for other members of the network and reach consensus that way, rather than with the expenditure of energy as a calculated mine might. PC mining has not begun yet, it'll begin when they're through this stage. I think it's a novel idea because this lowers the barrier to entry for people who don't have access to mining equipment or investment money, though it'll likely also lower the overall value of the coin in the long run. That said, one thing they are doing is trying to very strictly detect bots and inactive accounts -- once the mining starts, anyone who is not a verifiable human (though I'm sure it'll be trivial to bypass that for a sufficiently motivated botter) will have their account deactivated and their coins removed, which will take a significant amount of the tokens out of circulation.
Similar to how the Basic Attention Token parlays the idea that a person's "attention" is a resource, so too does Pi Network use the mobile user's "Attention" as the value of the token. Right now, because Pi is uncirculated and in its early stages, that attention is worthless, but the idea is that for each person who joins the network, there will be an increase in the collective community's value of attention, which can be used for marketing or paying for services that utilize that attention. Pi's based entirely around utilizing all of these leftover resources.
Anyway, like I said, my code is 'grey'. Hope people join this, it looks like an easier way to do BAT, which I also like.
