I had a similar thing happen to me. I was renting a really nice rather big place, always paid rent on time, no problems, no damage to house or anything. Lived there almost 2 years, and suddenly the landlord came over and informed me I was being evicted. There was no arguing, I just had to go, the reason, the landlord decided they wanted the renovate the place and turn the house into a bed and breakfast business. It's their land, their house. I had to just accept their decision. I found another place to live in like a day or two of searching for other places to rent anyways, and there was no problem moving because the landlord gave me good references, and gave my full bond back too.
And it should be totally legal and not stigmatized in any way

If you're in commercial real estate, you WANT to be in debt. You know what the landlord of those huge multi family complexes do when they fully pay it off? Take out another loan with it as collateral to finance their next project. It is also why you don't want to buy into co ops that have almost paid off their debt service, it means your fees is about to jump big time, as the owners take out an even bigger loan on the property.

I don't know about their situation in detail but we had a guy paying not even half of others rent in a building because he was sitting there already for 40 years. Sure it's cool that he won't cause problems like young students and his income is guaranteed as a pensioner but half rent is still shitty.
