Have the CCENT. Worth it imo if you actually fire up GNS3 and learn how to configure the stuff. First multizone OSPF network I got working made me feel like a genius.

Self taught will do nothing for you without experience or connections.
I'd recommend getting a job as a network technician for a service provider or contractor doing cable install/repair. If you decide to move up from that then look into certs for networking.
Experience will trump certification in IT. Most jobs in the field will say "requires degree and 2 years experience (experience may substitute for degree")
While ccent and ccna are difficult tests, if that's all you have don't expect a big paycheck job. They are probably the most cheated on tests due to being almost an industry standard; which means people are studying braindumps for two weeks and passing the tests without understanding the topics
