Loss of Masculinity isn't necessarily a physical degeneration thing. For much of history, and for many cultures, women weren't given choices as to who they married. Marriages happened to join families/form alliances, and for the acquisition of property/income.

Wouldn't surprise me if women were actually the primary providers, with men getting lucky, every now and then, with their hunting. If that was the case, would that have actually given them more control over who they had children with?
