I wouldn't buy one because they seem a little expensive for something that still leaves you exposed to the elements and would be a thief magnet if left unattended, but I rode the public ones when I visited San Francisco last year. It was amazing how fast and effortlessly I could get across town.
The assisted-pedal ones are becoming extremely common in Dublin now, and not in danger of being outlawed on a whim like those e-scooters might be here.

If you live far away and don't mind a long commute I imagine they are ok, but if you are under 5 miles away from work then just get a bike from Craigslist. It keeps you in shape, and in my case it's about as fast to bike to work because I can bypsss all the traffic
