You're not supposed to actually sell the property unless its your actual home and you want to recoup on mortgage payments, or you're part of a real estate group that can make up for the ROI with volume. You hold and collect rent.

people always asked why we dont rent out the vacation house and i just say that i dont really trust anyone and i like to vacation there and dont want people being there if i want to go stay there. but it never really made sense.. turns out it was my aryan instinct at the disgust of being a rent collecting jew.

Agreed. Saying that landlords are always bad is just lazy thought. There are tons of people out there who do not want the headache or responsibility of owning, while someone else is willing to do the job. They exchange $ for work, like any other transaction out there.

Just think of any transient person - students, people with temporary jobs, people new to the area looking to purchase but still shopping around, etc.

Not to mention, owning and operating a serious piece of commercial real estate is no joke. It is not as simple as "I own the deed, I always get paid". It's a lot of work to navigate bureaucracy, manage maintenance and contractors to keep the buildings running and up to code, do demolishing and build-outs for newly signed tenants, it really is a business like any other.
