Except LN is designed for fast, small transactions. You can still use the original protocol.
It's just a layer on top, not a hard fork like all the shitcoins do today. B-but muh scaling, we had to fork! Right and then (((they))) also have to do the same.
In fact, if you really wanted to destroy bitcoin, the best way would be trying to get a hard fork with breaking changes adopted by a large fraction of miners. Take away CPU power to make the chain less secure. And all the shady tactics, to get normies to use your shitcoin instead.

BTC is a brand. JUST a brand. If tomorrow people collectively decided to use, say, Nano, Bitcoin Cash or whatever else, nothing would stop them. Blockstream, etc. have no power over the will of people. If one complains that "ahh ahh they stole the brand", it means that he's simply unable to make the masses use crypto as a payment system without using an established brand.
There are always options for people who want to pay with crypto. There's simply little demand.
