Depending on what you consider the golden years, there was no income tax at all. Income taxes were originally imposed to fund war efforts and stuck around permanently after the civil war IIRC, sales taxes and tariffs were originally all the government used to fund itself.
You can't even blame boomers for income taxes being what they are now, since the 16th ammendment was passed by the silent generation.
