Metamask seed

Hello Jow Forums, I have some Ethereum on my metamask.
My PC isn't working and needs to be repaired, so I've tried to recover my wallet on another PC. But each time when I enter seed I'm getting message that it's invalid.
I don't understand how can this be, because I'm writing seed from the photo I got when created account (yes I know making photo was stupid) and I also recovered from that seed in the past when I needed to reinstall windows and all was fine. Ethereum is still on the address, no one has stolen it. And even if I got hacked, I'm sure I'd be able to restore account with seed, while hacker would stole my coins.
So how can this be? Can seed phrase somehow change without any notification? I also tried to restore from it in MEW but it neither have worked, so the problem is with the seed, not with Metamask.
What should I do?

Thankfully I have link on another account.
But to stake it I need metamask anyway.

nobody is going to help you here
no frens here, your failure is a win for everybody who holds eth. This is the best advice you can hope for

> failure is a win for everybody who holds eth.
I'm sure most of u have coins on wallets backed by mnemonic.
There is some shady shit going on with mnemonic, how could it work once and now become invalid?
What if the same thing happens to your hardware wallet for example?

If it worked before but not now, you're making some trivial error in transcribing the seed. If it's written in columns, are you reading it in rows or vice versa? Check each word is on the wordlist and that you're spelling it correctly.

is the photo of written text or is it a screenshot of typed text? is there a chance you are misreading one of the words of making a typo? that's really the only thing I can imagine it could be, or you are on some fake version of metamask but if your coins havent been stolen that's probably not it. triple check and try again

oh got you. You fucked up your larp faggot
go FUD on reddit, youtube or twitter, not enough normies on here yet. Come back during fomo in 8 months. Shame on me, I didn't read the OP file name

You probably misspelled a word.

seed phrase can change on updates yes, didn't you write the new one down? it is usually shown in a popup window after update

>Didn't buy a HW
>Took picture of private key/seed
OP you don't give a shit, Thanks for your lose!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

this is a security feature by the way

It is a screenshot of a seed phrase generated by metamask itself when I created my wallet. I don't think there's a typo, because I've made around 20 attempts on different gadgets in both mew and metamask, still getting the same error.

this. it happened too me as well luckily i only had dust in the wallet, fuck metamask you need a trezor bro

What if the same shit happens with HW? I have only a tiny amount of Ether in my metamask, but now I don't want to mess with seed phrases at all because fuck it. So maybe HW isn't that good.
Well this is maybe what happened, however I didn't get any pop-ups... Fuck this stupid extension.

how much was in the wallet?

Less than 1 Ether and some powh shitcoins worth around 0.3 ether.

i was just larping btw fren seeds dont change contact support

> seeds don't change
Well looks like they do. There is no way it is a wrong seed because I even checked the date I made a photo and day of my first transaction in etherscan.
I'll contact support, but I don't think they will give me my pennies back. Actually I can handle it, but I fear now same shit can happen with hardware wallet once I put all my life savings on it.

I would focus on what changed, since you told you're on another pc I'll check the keyboard layout in the OS settings maybe, or shit like that. I'm pretty confident the issue is machine-related, the chances are way higher than your seed words magically become invalid all of a sudden

> seeds don't change
>Well looks like they do
Dude, seriously, don't get stuck on an irrational conclusion and start your cycle of thoughts from You're gonna recover your wallet either way but it's better if you lose less time/patience in the process

I tried on 2 pcs and on my phone, both mew and metamask. Same error all the time.
Also tried typing words in notepad without spaces, pasting them into metamask and making spaces after that (the only suggestion I've found on metamask support forum) still not working.

my advice. buy 2 40GB SSD drives and install Lubuntu Linux on the first SSD, encrypted with LUKS and use a strong password. Backup password at a safe location, then learn it by heart. Then install Brave Browser and setup MetaMask on your fresh Linux Install. Use the second SSD to clone the first HDD, store it as backup at a safe location. Use this setup as cold storage.

Never had trouble desu

Well that's a bitch but still it's highly unlikely that (((they))) fucked up a cryptographical standard to fuck specifically you in the exact timeframe your PC went to the repair shop, because metamask was working till that point, no? Do you get me?

I had a freind who got someone elses account when they recovered their metamask with their seed, weird shit is possible

You dont need the seed words, use the private key in MEW

Seed phrase is not a metamask standard, they can fuck it up all they want but they can't gain arbitrary control over the thing. You're friend probably was lucky enough to misspell the right word. Math doesn't lie, for the rest there's

cross check every word with a dictionary

Thx for the advice however I don't think I'm going to mess with metamask anymore, fuck them.
I don't think I got hacked, because hacker would move coins, but they are still on the address.
Yeah I understand that, I'd already thought that I saved wrong seed, but it worked in the past so the only possible solution is that seed changed without even notifying me, as mentioned here:
Hope this is only metamask issue and won't happen with Trezor for example.

Is it possible to extract private key from dead PC?

>the only possible solution is that seed changed without even notifying me
I don't think this is possible and also googled the thing without any results. Again, I think you should stop spending energy on this hypothesis and try harder with your guessing game, eventually the real problem will come up and you'll be like 'fuck me it was this shit all along kek'

Sure, as long as the hard drive works all your stuff is still there. How was the private key stored? Text document? Json file?

Copy all the browser files (chrome or firefox) from the old pc to the new one, use your password to open the wallet

Well google says that the only metamask private key is a seed phrase.

Yeah I guess this is the only possible solution. Hope it will work, thx.

Maybe the only one that it gives you but still, there's a private key somewhere in your browser app data folder ready to be recovered. But that will be tedious so better to stick with figuring out why the seed isn't working for the moment, also because it would be a shame dropping metamask for a simple lack of understanding it, you'll end up having problems with every single type of wallet in existence if you don't come up with a good understanding of its underlying tech

One more thing, try the seed in MEW

Attached: mew.jpg (538x859, 65K)

It's a dirty solution that probably won't work, you can copy the files but what about registry keys for example? Your better shot should be to temporarily swap the hard drives and hope that the shit will boot up. If it won't it's a driver problem or cpu related, in both cases you can fix it with an automated bootable disk called 'paragon adaptive restore', I don't remember if it's free or not but shouldn't be an issue to get a copy if you came this far

Correction: seed phrase is the recovery solution for ALL your metamask accounts at once BUT actually you can export the private keys for your various metamask accounts ONE BY ONE

Already tried, getting the same error as in metamask. Looks like once my seed just changed magically, lol.
> swap the hard drives
Okay, will try this at first.

no they don't seeds can't change ever.
You are messing up a word.

However, whatever you decide to do, DON'T write on the old hard drive, DO NOT modify shit. Use it as it was read-only, that's your last ship so don't fuck it up early denying yourself the chance to give a better try when you'll come up with a greater solution. Trust me, I dealt with similar shit countless times. If you have the possibility to clone/backup the hard drive then you can do pretty much anything you want, otherwise better be still

I've only 1 metamask account. Is private key stored somewhere in my chrome folder as json file?

How can I mess up a word for 20 times, on different gadgets and wallets?

send picture, i will try for you

No json file sadly with metamask, you have to export the private key in a text form but to do so you need the OS up and running. So swapping the hard drives is your best shot for the moment

The absolute state of internet meme monies

LOL BIZ I'M AN ABSOLUTE RETARD.
I MISTYPED THE WORD 20 TIMES. MY SEED PHRASE CONTAINS ENGLISH WORD THAT IS ALSO PRESENT IN MY NATIVE LANGUAGE BUT IS WRITTEN DIFFERENTLY, SO I WAS AUTOMATICALLY MISTYPING IT. NOW I COPIED FROM DICTIONARY AND IT WORKED.
Nice that Jow Forums is anonymous so no one will know my shame. Thanks to any1 who tried to help frens.

you can extract the json (usually it's stored in a json and the private key is encrypted with wallet passphrase)
unless your hard drive is encrypted of course you can recover it
buy a cheap 5$ sata->usb and mount the partition, browse the file system and retrieve the json
at this point you only needs to import it and use the wallet passphrase

you saved the seed phrase, but not the private key? why?

bro just use a raspberry pi

user that might actually be it, i think metamask does something weird like list the words in columns rather than lines

>seed phrase can change on updates
LOL INTO THE TRASH GOES METAMASK

Fucking retard

did you learn a lesson faggot?

Attached: 5743543.jpg (550x550, 38K)

This is hilarious, but I'm glad you recovered your funds fren. You won't make this mistake again, the first time you have to recover from your seed is always the most stressful.

Attached: 1559218204736.jpg (234x250, 6K)

oh well
glad you recovered your funds

Save the fucking private key

What did I told you?

Called it. Glad you got your account back, user. Now delete that photo and make a proper written backup of your seed.
