The fundamentals of software design are not the same tier as coding. That said, when I was growing up, comp sci was short bus. It was the trades tier of the sciences and regarded as the shit you did if you just wanted a BSc and didn't have the chops for bio/chem/eng/phys/math.
You can literally teach yourself almost all of a bachelor's of computer science if you aren't dog shit at math and can grasp the scientific method plus the basic logics that go with it.

Your technology experience growing up doesn't count for shit, talk to me when you've learned to program on 5.25 floppy in 5th grade. Your technologies today are designed for incompetent users from the ground up, and your ability to utilize them as tools has been subsidized by guess what, my generation - who designed them. College isn't everything. Something my grandfather told me that rings true more and more is that there are few people who are genuinely intelligent, and few that are motivated. Combine the two, and things happen. Everything you've learned in school is based on theory, where every question has a classed "right" answer, yet as you will find life doesn't work like that. Also, most of this success you talk of will be much more dependent on politics, both on a micro and macro scale. Your post clearly shows you have not cultivated that attitude that comes with understanding that. I can tell you that I'd bet my own balls you'll never have a shot in hell of taking my job unless I'm the one hiring you so that I can enjoy an early retirement. None the less, I wish you good luck.
