It doesn't seem like it was owned by Szabo before 2008. Some company named "smartservices" picked it up in 2001 (not blockchain-related) with an address in Pennsylvania. Then it expired in 2006 and was picked up likely by whoever Satoshi Nakamoto is in 2008. And then transferred to Sergey in 2014.
It confuses me that smartcontract.com was registered several times throughout 2008:
