I make like $120k a year from skills I all learned by myself.

First I wanted to learn how to make a website and started on the Tizag tutorials.
Then I ended up on DynamicDrive wanting to learn how to do special effects on websites via DHTML.
And eventually I learned proper programming via an actual library book.

This took like 5 years, just shit I did in my free time. But it didn't make me money.

Then I decided to start freelancing. I'd earn around $300-500 monthly on RentACoder (O think it's been renamed to UpWork now?), working like 4-5 hours per day.

Then I decided to join the app store craze. Learned mobile development using an online tutorial. Barely made any money. Published over 40 apps over 5 years, yet I earn like $50-100 per month.

Then one app went viral. Earn six digits within a month, my first million in like 3-4 months.

Here's where I learned that learning the skill is like 5% of the way to making it. The other 95% is luck.

There are hundreds of thousands of pajeet coders that can code, hoping to work at Silicon Valley with H1B visas. Only 1% of them will make it.

There are hundreds of thousands of apps on the app store, probably hundreds of apps released everyday. Only 1% of those will earn decent income.

There are thousands of streamers on Twitch, only a handful of those will make it and actually be a to live off of streaming.

The point is, getting the skill is not the hard part. Making it is basically a lottery, so you need to have as many tickets as possible.

I've seen people collect tons of marketable skills, try to make money off of it for over a decade before something sticks. Release over a hundred apps and barely anything. If you're too busy wallowing in self-pity to even learn just one skill, you're never gonna make it.

I see people who make money doing social media accounts and shit they just make social media accounts and grow them but im really self conscious about it

I developed a skill as a teenager. It started with making websites, now I am a programmer. No one ever helped me or handed me anything (not counting reading manuals and googling). I had no mentors sadly. If I had I could learn thing I know now 3-5 times faster.

How did I start? I was a narcissistic piece of teenage shit and I wanted my own website about me and my interests. That was before words like "blog" or "social media" even existed. Internet was young. By the time I was skillful enough to do this I knew I was nothing special. I was just an ugly guy with IQ over 101. But I already got so interested in computer science that I continued.

Curious thing that you can grow or at least start growing because of a flaw in character, like being narcissistic or having too much ungrounded confidence.

Make no mistake, my life sucks. I got computer autism, no gf, forever alone, I am probably an asshole, but I do have a skill I got myself and it still is interesting to me and puts food on my table. But I eat alone.

Still I would not recommend going into computer science if you want respect. People will respect you, they will be civil, but you will forever just be a "computer guy". Programming it too complex for people to understand it and make a measurement of you. 30yo boomer here. The only marketable skill I learned from education my parents got for me was software development. I learned on my own through getting into racing how to fix cars, how to tune suspension systems, and how to fabricate my pwn parts with welding and basic machine tools. I also used these metalworking skills and my hobby of shooting to learn how to do some gunsmithing and bring demilled foreign parts kit guns back to life. I learned bushcraft and land navigation through going out inna woods. I learned canning and growing veggies through just doing it in my yard. I learned roofing through fixing my house. Like nigga just start doing things, anything you want to know how to do has plenty of direction on youtube or somewhere, it isn't that hard. Don't be afraid of breaking things, sometimes you fuck things up but that's ok. It may sometimes cost a little money but the skills you get in return are worth far more. Besides, very rarely do I fuck anything up so badly it would have cost less to pay someone else to do something for me.
