maybe you meant 'stupidest personal luxury buy'? as investments, they act ~gold and sometimes ~land (value appreciation) -- unlike most everything else one can buy (shitty equity, cars, savings, houses past 10y)
just buy rolex or patek, only brands that retain/gain value

i had a really high end fake patek i got in thailand as a kid (for fuckn $100..) which looked authentic but functionally ended up brekaing, and upon a close enough look was fake
years later i got a real rolex explorer (~$5100 after 2 years, used) and you can tell the night and day difference, particularly in its weight/materials

High end Pateks are worth $500, they are way better than a watch you would buy in Thailand for $100. For someone that is not a specialist they are pretty hard to tell from the gen. Also the movement inside is Miyota 9015 so these are pretty reliable.
Now good Rolex reps use the same 904L steel as the gens and the weight is the same.

When I first started college I was curious about becoming a watchmaker. Turns out that's actually a trade with a completely independent training body. I still wonder if I should've become one from time to time.

That's essentially what I'm getting at, yeah. There are certainly worse things you could buy to hold their value, but with luxury goods you pay beyond the cost of manufacturing. You pay markup for the brand. I'm just saying that for people who can't afford >$10,000 for a watch, buying a rep is a better alternative than blowing your money like a nigger.
