Depends on your definition of idiocy, but it's not a scam. Devices participate in determining the next block in the chain via a consensus algorithm for what the next number ought be. Your device would phone home to the network, participating in each round of voting, with the strength of ones security circle (comprised of people you've invited to the network) giving more weight to one's vote, represented by an increase in mining rate.
The value of the token is derived from the effort your phone takes to participate in the voting, and the attention you pay to the app (kinda like BAT), as well as the effort you put in each day to start the miner.
You can use anyone's code in this thread to sign up -- if you do, they'll get a boost to their mining rate and you'll count them among your own list of network members, since they were the one who invited you.
