First time I lost 15k because support wouldn't close my trades when I lost access to my account and was waiting for 2fa reset. Fine, shitty system but still my fault for not having a back up.
Second time there was a bug in their system in calculating my margin because i had a long and short open at the same time. They disabled my trading, I could not sell my asssets to reduce the leverage and fix the calculator. I begged and pleaded support for 2 fucking days to either unsuspend the account and let me sell the assets or for them to close my positions until they figure out whats wrong with my account. By the time it was fixed and I saw the message, I already went from a 60k usdt balance to 30k. At that point I didn't even fucking care and left the trade open to get liquidated.
They even assigned me a direct contact account manager. Which is literally the only reason it was even fixed 36 hours later. The telegram support just kept telling me "wait" "I don't know" and variations of "add funds, fuck off". I have been a full time trader for 1 year as my source of income, I switched to bitmax from my secondary to my main exchange after not having problems for months. I regularly did 1m volume a week, and paid them 300-500$+ a month in margin interest.
dumped 2mio BTMX within 30minutes and then suddenly my account got frozen. they told me I'm suspected for market manipulation. wasn't able to move funds or trade for 7 days.

Let this all be a lesson. Avoid Bitmex (and margin trading in general)
You literally can't make a loss with crypto at this point in time if you avoid three pitfalls:
- Selling with a loss - Choosing a coin that looks bad after extensive research - Margin-trading
If you can hodl whatever promising project you're in for 1-2 years, you are guaranteed to make a killing. The only thing shooting you in the foot is yourself.

Yeah, they still fucked me by having terrible support on telegram to not close the trades but would it have been better at binance or anywhere else? No.

2 reasons.
1) as a hedge if you are using high lev. Say you long eth but worry about bitcoin dumping so you short btc to prevent losses. If btc stays stable, your eth trade keeps its upside. If btc dumps, it will probably dump faster than eth so you can exit the trade and keep profit. If btc pumps, you are betting that eth will pump more and have time to exit the trade.
2) if the market is swinging in a range, you can close whatever position is in profit, and reopen it at the other end of the range while closing the old trade now in profit
but most importantly, it's the safest way to keep a trade open while you sleep if you don't want to get stop lossed out on volatility
