the same reason why companies who needed an easy way to use computers in their office didn't make microsoft before microsoft did.
not enough foresight and not enough technical know-how, smart contracts are pretty new to pretty much everyone except turbo autists who have been studying this field for a long time.
and now chainlink will help them make their own solutions, theres an easy way to do it now days without having to make your own solution - by connecting to the chainlink network. thats why you create a product or a service and then raise awareness as to why your product or service can be useful.

Smart contracts are still new, but the big players have tons of more work power and know-how than small companies with less than a 100 employees. It's not like they won't catch up on Chainlink in almost an instant when they want to. Being first has never guaranteed anything.

The source code of Microsoft Word is not open nor available to 3rd parties.
The source code of Chainlink is open.
The day somebody copy pastes the whole thing and change the usage of Link tokens for ETH (which probably would require a matter of days to complete), the project is dead. The reason this has not been done is because nobody uses it.
