I'm under the impression chainlink is a .append(" " ) onto ETH. Nothing is replacing ETH as it has too much traditional legitamcy. There are so many projjects with better technology than ETH at the moment but the ETH user base is not wanting ETH to die. ETH can die, but I'm thinking it's here to stay until at least 2020 or 2021.

That's what makes chainlink viable. Eth being outdated means little when it has real world use right now.
