you actually have to buy (usually) at least 1 day before the ex div date. The reason being is that you need to be on the books as the shareholder of record on the ex div date

technically, you sell it after the record date. American companies are nice enough to put that the day after exdiv though, so you can sell on exdiv and still get the div (takes a day to change shareholder records, so you‘re still accounted for on record day).
all u need to know though is buy before exdiv, allowed to sell on or after exdiv day.
All my meals are Homemade from ingredients, I don‘t buy premade stuff anymore, except soups and kraft mac n cheese (i mean cmon).
