How the fuck is Kmart still in business?

So I got hired at this place and I asked my manager why I am making 7.50 hr (My states minimum) when the competitive rate locally is 11 hr. I was told the store hadn't turned a profit in 12 years, and the company is trying to turn things around (this is the same for the whole company). I am a pretty optimistic guy but, at what point do you just give up? I don't really see the point of keeping a business open loosing all that money.

its a money laundering front for another chain of stores

I kind of miss Kmart. Childhood memories. There are two left in my entire state and the one that is somewhat near is fucking barren. Hopefully it holds up for you, but I wouldn't count on great job stability.

K-Mart thrives mostly in areas where Wal-Mart is a little too far of a drive.
They almost bit the bullet in 2002. Sears bought them out at the last minute.

Why are you working at Kmart if the competitive rate is 11/hr?

This also be prepared for your last paycheck to bounce.

did sears go bankrupt too though?

Op is a neet with no job history or a felon

Nope I have 3 years of job experience with perfect record I just have never been or worked for kmart

I wanted a retail job and they didn't disclose my pay until my first day. They told me they needed to "check my experience" this should have been a red flag for me

At least it's the kind of job that matters so little you wont need to give a 2 weeks notice when you find something better

OP do they have niggers in kmart?

None that live here

If they are trying to turn the company around by under paying (illegally?) their workers then it’s too late and time to give up. The only time I would ever recommend waiting it out is if you k ow their plans to turn it around or have faith in the company. But I would never do that if the destination is $11/h

Sorry misread, disregard the (illegally?)

I have to take the racist approach

Kmart gave comfy childhood memories, but the stores never seemed to update. The buildings and layouts were nice and new and clean in the 1980s. The layout and stores never changed in my area - same locations, same (disgusting/dusty/moldy) shelves, all the employees were coal black and extremely hostile..and anything I can get there, I can order online and not have to deal with rude blacks or dirty disgusting stores from the 80s

Kmart is like an upscale Goodwill, ghetto trash whenever you go in one, but the prices of any other mid-grade chain store

Sears filed for bankruptcy last October but it managed to secure enough capital to survive and keep 400 stores open.

My local Sears liquidated everything in its building for upwards of 75-95% off MSRP before it closed this January.
It was the biggest anchor for the only local mall that's left in the area. The other one closed last year after many years of being a ghost. It couldn't survive the 2008 recession. Having a JC Penny as one of its anchors didn't help.
The Sears had 3 expansive floors. At one point in time, it was run like a full-fledged department store with tons of specialty services. I went there a few days before it closed for good and it was the first time I'd been in there since 2008. Even by 2008, it was a bit of a sad sight.
They fucked up.
When Wal-Mart rose in the 80s, Sears didn't pay attention to it at all.
In 1990, they discontinued their century-old catalog that was at one point a revolution in goods distribution. It was a legend, but by the 80s it was running at a loss. The catalog was most popular in rural areas. There was a tremendous shift to urban areas throughout the 20th Century. Their retail stores by outgrew the catalog.
Add to that, they didn't pay attention to online retail at all in the 90s. They had all the logistics in place already and a vast supply of goods to sell. Had they simply adapted their catalog to the internet - something that would've been exciting at the time - they'd probably still be a tremendous influence. Then again, saying something like that in hindsight is a lot easier. It's like saying "you could have bought Microsoft shares in the 70s wtf".
By the time that Sears did focus on online retail, Amazon and ebay were over a decade old and firmly established. They were like the Windows Phone of online retailing and it was too little, much too late.
Due to this, they stopped giving a fuck about their stores. They let them fall apart. That's why they are where they are now.

Sears got cannibalized by parasitic private equity types. Not even kidding

I find dead malls to be pretty aesthetic desu. Every dead mall seems to have always died because of a JC Penney or a Sears being their only anchor

In Australia Kmarts are still going strong here

There were 2 Kmarts in my neighborhood; both are now closed. I got some pretty good deals in their final sale days, though.

Dead malls are super depressing, desu.

i worked at a kmart 11 years ago, very first job. I didnt see how we were staying open then. shelfs were half full. no more than 6-10 cars in the parking lot at a time. i didnt even know these things were still open.

they died because they were filled with niggers dealing drugs and harassing peoples in most cases

Really? Alright I'm gonna need a location

kek its so fucking true. Or a shitty movie theater parents take their kids to because of the discounted matinees

Idaho

Cool story, Grandpa but visiting hours are over baaai

The prevailing theory is that Kmart, Sears, etc all these brands hanging on by a thread continue to exist only looking to be acquired by another company. Basically, trying desperately to deliver a final profit for the president, shareholders, etc.

No way, there's a 50% chance we live in the same town user
If you are here you might end up very bored but at least the crime rate is very very low

I would not stay working there for one more minute. Go get the $11 job.
