>18 months ago a roommate asked me to teach him java because he wanted to "make programmer money" and "stop drawing blood for a living"
>teach him for a month or two and then let him go on his own
>fast forward to today
>he still struggles with methods, iterating through arrays, lists, using data types like booleans, et cetera
>asked me how to grab data from some crypto site
>show him RESTful protocol and an HTTP library (e.g. OkHttp)
>he completely panics and proceeds to stop that project entirely
>I'm moving out soon (in around 2 months)
>he can't find a new roommate and will probably have to move out
>convinced he just needs another year to get good at java and he'll find a gig where he can live by himself

I honestly don't think it'll click for him. He's not a math or computer oriented person and this seems super unintuitive for him. I tried telling him to just drop it and go do personal fitness training (he's a great gym partner) but he insisted on this. Any tips on how to encourage him to transition to something that isn't outside his domain? I've tried being positive for a while but the outlook doesn't look good.

you should be discussing this with a therapist. not on a board full of therapy patients.

Therapists cost money, Jow Forums doesn't.

java is pretty shit though... why not javascript/nodejs

I'm just following this at the moment and it's been fun: udemy.com/the-complete-nodejs-developer-course-2/

This website seems to have cool stuffs too, haven't tried them though: education-ecosystem.com/projects/cryptocurrency/ethereum/?q=ethereum

Nice blogpost faggot

to add, it was really unintuitive for me as well when I first started with freecodecamp

The instructor for the linked udemy course explains everything well and I'm sure you friend will be able to pick it up - he seems to have the dedication

I asked him what he wanted to learn and he said, "Whatever you do." And since I do mostly backend Java stuff, there you go. This isn't a Java issue. This is a "I don't know how to construct a function to achieve a simple task" problem.

Perhaps doing a bootcamp would help if learning by himself isn't working.

T. MD schlomo

programming is literally just a glorified plumber most of the time it's more about getting used to a new way of thinking

just introduce the udemy course to him, it's actually pretty good and assumes 0 background

let him do cs50 first and if he cant finish it then he gone

Nice blog post, but anyways you don’t owe him shit dog, you have to learn to walk before you run have him watch some basic YouTube videos on data in general, start with sql etc

>cs50
don't do this

just finish the fucking udemy course on nodejs

learn 2 code is pretty much the worst advice you can give anyone. the job market is very competitive. at best after studying for a year without a degree, you'll land a front end job for $14 by undercutting everyone else for low end positions.
you could make $20 an hour by just waiting tables or being a personal trainer, with no experience.

he got 0 exp aka brainlet he needs to start at the bottom nodejs is a meme

Actually JS might be kind of good. You can write functioning code without even classes. Plus you get that instant gratification by having a react app display a webpage

Not to shit on you user but how good of a teacher are you? Also how smart is your friend? I personally find that I learn better from a book than most other sources of knowledge. Maybe if your friend goes through a basic java book with clear examples he might be able to apply them to similar problems and actually learn something.

How could we profit from this?

Introduce him to python and then django. Java is for Android apps.

Well there is this coin I keep hearing about.

Ok user, if we're going to be able to help you, we need to start at the beginning. Tell us about your mother...

Iris....Iris have you heard about our Timmy? Well his flatmate user has been schooling him in computers for a year - hes almost got a computerology you know. I dont know how he manages, Timmy was never a good student he was more suited to sports or so I thought I never believed he was capable of an ology he couldnt tie his laces until he was 13 never mind the panic attacks. He doing well Iris he told me hes just applied for a job at Apricot can you believe it? I cant believe hes got his act together Iris hes got a great flat, hes sociable everyone loves him onwards and upwards Iris onwards and upwards. I was so worried Iris that hed have to back to shit shovelling but it looks like those days are over - happy days are here again Iris!

>flash forward six months from now to when this guy bullshits his way into a better job than OP by being a likable jock

literally where outside of pakigeria does anyone even remotely related to development make 14 an hour. even designers make more than that.

Introduce him to JavaServer Faces and wait for him to kill himself, as I'm about to do now.

Don't listen to this faggot lol

My older brother almost took an IT job out of college with an informatics degree for $17 an hour working midnight to 8 am. His first local offer two months out of graduation, but he got an offer from Boeing for $30/hr a week before he was gonna start at IT

>Learning Java and not scheme

WHY

people only learn by failing, let him fail

>react app
go with Vue.js desu~

>18 months ago a roommate asked me to teach him java because he wanted to "make programmer money" and "stop drawing blood for a living"

Literally peak bubble behavior. Anyone getting into programming now is going to be buying the top for sure.

PajIT sucks now. It's flooded with ever decreasing talent. I've seen it transform over the past 15 years into something I had never imagined. Many of the guys I worked with in the past have abandoned it. I don't look at it as the safe choice that I used to when I was in HS and the H1B has a lot to do with that. I'd tell him to go for anything else.

why the fuck are you that worried about somebody else you dumb fucking bitch

worry about your own life
