former trucker here. you wont get to see much of anything except the interstate. every once in a while you do go into a town or major city but your driving a huge ass truck that can't be parked anywhere so that rules out eating at nice restaurants or going to shops. all you really get to do is hang out at boring truck stops and the only women you will meet are other dyke truckers and lot lizards.
after a while the truck itself starts to feel like a prison cell.

Automatically shifting gears on an easily measured incline and decline is trivial, what isn't trivial is preempting other drivers actions, including anticipating instances where other drivers will break the rules of the road, and incorporating that into a working model.
And even that can be done - the real kink left to iron out is the actuarial math behind the inevitable eventuality that someone is killed by an automated vehicle. Until that is figured out my best bet is we'll see driver-less trucks on dedicated automation-only highways before anything else.
