In theory they used some sort of analysis software to keep track of these small token of which they sent. Your link wallet will will eventually trickle down to a wallet that will connect to ur id. If they managed to get that info, they then initiate their criminal intents. Other than it could be a market strategy like these guys said.

i think they only keep track of the AMB. so they see if 3 of the wallets they sent to, then send to 1 master wallet. meaning those 4 wallets are yours. then it is 4 times easier to figure out who you are. as long as you dont send the 0.1 amb it should be fine

But i don't get how sending the dust token helps tracking anything. Why not use tracking software with logic to just scan for wallet addresses that have a certain threshold of link and track the funds to and from the wallet as it moves to new addresses. Sending the AMB seems like an unnecessary step unless i'm missing something.
