I used to mine BTC and LTC on my raggedy old laptop. I intented to hodl that for longterm like the next 5 years. But somehow my son got to it when I went on holiday with my frens. He wanted to play games and formatted the whole disk. Is there a way to retrieve?

Kinda' this. If you actually have a few quid's worth on there, recovery companies will charge between $300-500 for basic-ass recovery like that. Totally worth doing it. If you didn't have enough on there to make that investment worth it, download TestDisk and recover the old partition, or use Recuva to try to get files.

do not start your pc, the more you use the hard drive now, the more you will overwrite old data (even just booting it will save to disk stuff like pagefile and other tmp bullshit. Do don't do it.
Get an external hard drive bigger than the one you want to rescue.
Get a usb stick with a live kali linux (it had many forensic tools)
First thing you need to do i a "dd" of the disk to an image that you save into the external one (dd is a copy of all the raw bytes).
Then you can use tools or do some manual forensic on the back image itself.
Never touch the formatted hard drive or you will just keep messing it more and more.

The more you use it, the more the disks will be used. 'Deleting' means that the space is now open to overwrite. You need data recovery.
