my last job we had to bid for vacation time at the beginning of every year. 10 days off, no holidays. if you had to go to court they'd tell you to come in early. literally impossible to have anything resembling a social life outside of work

I grew up in a small business family and my parents worked 7 days a week for decades no problem. Only took days off during Christmas and 4th of July.

Maybe normal people become insane when they can't have holidays, but I am used to it. I am especially used to the huge pile of money from running a business 7 days a week.

Basically I am a soulless robot w/ a lot of cash. Anyways I am thinking about hiring a manager for Monday and Tuesdays so I can just work like 5 days a week. Money can buy your days off, I guess.

In fFnland we have mandatory paid 4 weeks off and some professions get 8,333333 hours per month of paid leave as well. Also our holidays like christmas etc are paid holiday.

Wagies might be laughing, but regular business owners get shafted in the ass. Running a business of your own is the only way to truly make it 100k+. It's one of the clearest ways to advance your life into the upper-middle/upper class.

However, due to all of these rules and regulations that benefit the employees in countries such as yours, mid/small sized businesses struggle. If it is hard to run a small business of your own in your country, you and your countrymen will not make it.

same here, 4 weeks is the minimum for the whole year (usually 5 weeks at most places though), but it's just that at least two of those have to be consecutive so people could get away from the work routine at least once a year. True. You are not wrong. However, we need to be modest in how much an employer gives to employees.

From experience, easily giving up money or days off to employees don't make grateful and productive employees. Instead employees start to want and expect more from you. I learned that the hard way. Greed is universal, employer or employee.

I learned that it's much better to let disgruntled employees leave and quickly hire new ones (there are always people desperate for work) than try to existing keep employees in by giving them free shit. New employees are quite productive for about 6 months. Rinse and repeat. Much more productive than trying to make existing employees happy.

Sure, you gotta keep all things balanced. It's not like the employees could get "greedier" here, though - their rights are enshrined in law and they get the same deal mostly everywhere. There's no reason why someone would think "I've had 5 weeks off every year for 15 years, starting now I want 7 weeks off or I'm quitting".

I don't agree about constantly employing new people to keep the staff happy. A high turnover rate is very rarely a sign of a healthy business. Plus the trouble you go through with constantly training new employees takes a toll on you as well. Not to mention that the new employees take a while to settle in and reach their optimal efficiency. In 90% of the cases, having happy and stable employees is vastly better than endlessly cycling through the bottom barrel of society.

A business is healthy as long as profits are high. I can juggle new workers no worries. Won't tell you what kind of business I run but my work requires little training and most employees already learned all they had to learn elsewhere before coming here.

There is also a core of consistent employees that stay for a long time (like 50%). The other 50% are the high turnovers. If all 100% of my employees left regularly then I would be fucked.

Okay, that changes the game quite a bit. If you have competent and stable middle-managers and simply cycle the "grunts", then there is no reason why that can't work. Still hard to believe that people would start getting "greedy" or "entitled" after working at a place for a few months, especially in this job market.
