i graduated a big ten school in CS about 3 years ago, im making 130k salary and my last bonus was 42k. im 26 y/o

yeah im pretty much the most based person youll ever meet

My highscool pushed and pushed us saying computer science was the degree of the FUTURE etc. Finally came to my senses last minute and changed my uni course to mathematics and operational research. Maths may not be as good as actuary but its better the comp sci

how tf do you get a bonus that big if you’re not in finance? This has to be a Larp

Try your luck with moon3d and get good profit

>not in finance

well why don't you ask me before making an conclusion you absolute fucking idiot.

he is larping

Computer science degree is a scam, you learn only math basically, most of your useful experience with programing will be after you graduate.

lol

i don't know about burguers, but where i live comp sci is a meme degree. a bunch of arrogant faggots who know some fancy algorithms but can't build nothing.

You’re not a quant faggot and data analysts don’t get bonuses kys

One of my college friends that graduated DigiPen got a job at Microsoft and makes $60,000/year

He obviously works for JP Morgan/Chase.

are you kidding me? even the accountants get bonus's. Im not a quant and im not a data analyst, but im on the dev team which is creating trading algos, so they need retards like myself who are probably underpaid IN MY OPINION

I don't think that teaching programming is the main priority in CS universities. You will basically learn skills that makes you able to keep learning skills in the future.

most people are compulsive liars on this board.

He sucked a lot of cocks

you know how 5'11 is 'king of manlets'?

comp. sci is the 'king of wagecucks' degree.

study engineering or finance -> MBA if you don't want to be someone else's servant the rest of your life

been in software development for over 10 yrs since college. make 6 figures. work remotely. No commute, no cubicle, no shitty office. I can literally work from anywhere. flexible hours. It's about the best career you can have right now.

I got a job at Facebook after college and made 200k in my first year in losing salary, bonuses, stock, and sign on bonus

So yeah its kinda comfy, I'm 23

If you dont believe it go to levels.fyi and look at salaries at fb, google etc

*including

How hard it is to get a job at Facebook? Do you have to be like top 1% student or something?

I enjoy programming so I quite like my programming job.

Out of college at 22 I was making 60K. I now make 120K at 26 but I am a rare case for reasons I can't go into.

How hard is it to secure a position in the big tech companies?

I’m 22 with no degree and I make 60k in the trades. Probably won’t ever reach 120k without overtime but honestly it beats being a bluepilled office cuck

it's not what you know it's who you know kid.

I interned at google the summer after junior year and graduated with a 3.7 and honors

But all things considered, it wasn't hard st all. Getting a 3.7 is piss easy if you're not stupid and dont spend all your time doing drugs and going out

The hardest part of the whole thing are the technical interviews at google and fb, you basically need to grind a bunch of algorithm problems for a few months, but look at that time spent as an investment that sets you up for life and it shouldn't be too hard to find the motivation

In the same boat and it sucks cock. It’s nice making this money but it is peanuts in the city we have to work in. Waging is death across the board, until you don’t have to work on something you don’t give a shit about you are not free, that’s why you’re here on biz

just secured a job paying $450k using only html

Your friend is getting ripped off.

You better be saving that cash by living in a poor town in a flyover state, or I'll smack you through the screen.

his friend is Rajesh

how much do you have invested in Link

>only html
Fucking front end fag. Good on you for that amount of money though if not larp

I took a degree in chemistry, couldn't get any job at all. Had a bunch of research experience and a 3.9.Went back to technical college for 1 year in computer programming/self taught and just dropped out because I got a full time junior job. I literally applied for about 1 and a half weeks before getting hired.

Anyone that says CS/software is dead is a moron. I worked so hard studying chemistry and looking for work and for software I barley had to try kek

living in a rural area, own acerage in a mountain valley. several world class ski areas nearby. Cheap living. No crime, clean air, clean water. You'd have to be a cucked idiot to live in a city by choice. I laugh at all these burgers in silicon valley making 200-300k, working long hours and barely getting by. #cuckedlife

If you're in any way competent but with no drive or enterprise then you can still earn $100k per year working from home copy/pasting from stack overflow.

If you've got competency, drive and enterprise and some social skills then you can earn $250k per year in middle management or form your own consultancy and earn $1500 per day.

If you don't fancy wage slaving you can create a business and get funding from rich angels who just want to talk about what start-ups they're involved in at dinner parties without very much more than a mediocre idea.

what are some of the most lucrative areas of math? Dropped out of cs for math the moment I realised the disparity in quality of people (high level cs is all math anyway)

despite that I can't think of lucrative applications for math other than finance

I remember computer science (and psychology) were the most common majors in the college of science at my university during my orientation. There was one other nigga in chemistry and only me in biochemistry. Put that into perspective of how many niggas are going to be competing for jobs.

What is your day like working in FB?

Actually quite curious what a normal day for you is like working in tech companies or in the financial sector. How much do you work and do you have any regrets taking CS?

machine learning

Bump

This thread captures the computer science experience

Depends on the place you're working for. Generally speaking work is pretty laid-back and you aren't going full gear all day. I work at a smaller company (not a startup, so no big pressure), and pretty much just shitpost for 50% of my day and then work the other half.

No regrets at all. Exactly what I was aiming for in school. I'll probably take on a more ambitious role eventually but this is good for now.

Maybe worth it if you actually like it and/or live in murica. Everywhere else the IT bubble popped a loooong time ago and it's not worth it if you're going into it "just for the mjoney".

t. eurocuck who fell for the CS meme

It's definitely a meme degree atm. If you're going into CS in 2019 you're basically buying the top of the bubble.

In the US, 60k starting and 80-120k unless in a very high col.

Everyone is going into CS and there are no artificial barriers to entry (become a programmer in six weeks!). The field is going to be saturated in 10 years.

School was tough but shit man I work literally 20 hours a week and make 75k. Due for a raise. 100k incoming. Already own a 330k house and only in my mid 20s. Totally worth it but you do have to work hard especially to land that first job

I went to school 10 years ago and people were saying the same shit. Huur its going to be so saturated! Indians will replace you! Robots will replace you! Now programmers are even more in demand, everyone and their mom is making six figures. My bonus alone was >6 figures this year. And its funny people are STILL saying the same shit about how everyone is trying to become one. Yeah, just like doctors, everyone would love to be a programmer but most who try will fail out and just be too dumb to be good at it.

Saturated with retards. The true devs will be fine.

>My bonus alone was six figures
Kek. Maybe if you're a senior software engineer at Google. In reality, it is 80-120k outside San Francisco and Seattle.
>The field will never be saturated
I'm sure pharmacists, lawyers, and other formerly non meme professions said that 20-30 years ago.

This

was going to do a major in finance but actually switched to CS this semester right as im really getting into my major courses.
Learning python a little bit already, almost half way done with codecademy lel

as for what did you focus on in your studies? What are your skills, etc etc? Do you know python, R, and how long did it take you to learn it?

Also any advice for an up and coming newbie CS student? I was taking summer classes and have a two week break before fall semester starts so im gonna try and cram as much python in me as I can so my first programming class is gonna be ezpz

I'm a "senior" engineer but I don't live in SF.

>20-30 years ago.

Good thing I'll be retired in

>What exactly is life like after you graduate with a computer science degree? How much do you earn?
Pretty good. You will stress yourself out because you think you need to perform at 100% every day but eventually you realize this is not the case.
If you are not garbage at programming you will make $100k starting.

I'm a 30 year old boomer making just about 100K.
I could make a lot more if I shopped around but I'm working at my dream company so I shouldn't complain.

i went to 4 years of school
to a non acdredited school

currently a Teachers assistant teaching coding to high school kids lol

Are there any based sources for advice like blogs to help with making it in a CS job

Graduated from a bootcamp, going to be making 110k at my first job in November. I hope BTC stays down until then so I can accumulate more. I get p serious anxiety when it pumps desu.

I decent starting salary is around 250k. I started 275k with some negotiation. Pretty based.

MSc here, but in Germany. It’s great, can recommend. Around 85k EUR, no Stress Job, 35 Hours a week, 30 days holiday.

Ex-Amazon as well. For big tech you need to be very good technically, but more importantly have the right soft skills - teamfit, mindset and so on. Getting hired is hard, but ok if you are a high performer. Just be yourself man.

Programmer (SV tech scene) turned Nutritionist, eka NutriAnon here.

Its winner-take-it-all case with very skewed distribution. The more sticky you get to that laptop screen, the more socially retarded you will be. And unless you can play the political game well or well-connected and privileged with a tier-1 MBA, it doesn't matter as new army of CS graduates will replace you. PhDs usually work for English majors. Commodity startup game is also at its end-stage as easy VC money going to get crushed first in a deflationary collapse.

TIP that can save your life from your own gigantic "I'll be a Google Fellow" aspiration: If you want to remain in tech follow this (DYOR)

- Get into enterprise tech with a strong functional side (Oracle Financials / SAP / SAS etc.)
- Get techno-functional knowledge.
- Because of MOATs, your experience will not be devalued as quickly as a whizkid JS/React/Go programmer.
- Invest in Gold or Silver bullion
- DCA into LINK
- Look for niche REITs close stock-market correction.

I would be much happier and wealthier if someone would have taught me about the detrimental affect of anchoring too much on programming-induced-dopamine. LIVE !

What is MOATs?

You just had to throw link in there didn’t ya

Currently in school for a Comp Sci degree, but looking to get into Cyber Security after I graduate. Not a huge fan of programming.

What kind of work do you do? 85k is pretty good salary in europe.

>Get into enterprise tech
this, and also learn Java, you'll be able to find enterprise work anywhere. The good part is you'll get great benefits and a comfy salary, but the bad part is most enterprise jobs require a metric ton of dick sucking to move up

investopedia.com/ask/answers/05/economicmoat.asp

in this case career MOAT is: dominant MOAT of those enterprise companies which is "switching cost".

>ton of dick sucking to move up
That's better than figuring our JS/Go ammo is finished when you would turn 35.

Besides, if you can get into a solution engineering (mostly tech sales, but surprisingly slight autism is OK here) roles with SAP/SAS/Oracles functional knowledge, that's golden.

The key word is "functional". Don't end up programming ABAP/SAS stuff. Pick and chose a domain and stick to it. Even better, if you can slowly top it up with a suitable charter in that functional area.

I'm in community college during a "computer systems tech" program. Going to get some cisco certs and go into networking and eventually specialize in security. AM I gonna make it?

I started with compsci, but the university didn't have security courses related. I finished as a different major, and I returned for an M.S. in cybersec -- and I can assure you it's fucking awesome.

You probably write curry quality code

I don't write code, Dunning Kruger
