It's a blockchain that lets outside data be sent to smart contracts. Also known as an oracle network. Augur has proven that oracles don't work for decentralized systems since unforeseen circumstances happen too much.
In other words: if you need an oracle, you might aswell just build an app and connect to APIs yourself. It's free and there's literally zero need for a smart contract once you connect to internet APIs for data.

Sergey in a way created the token as a digital replacement of a complimentary "thank you" cup of coffee, not even joking. Technically, yes, if LINK becomes too expensive that won't be good news for Chainlink as a service, but good news for people who bought into it.

White paper states that it's supposed to be 1 LINK. There's always a chance that this will change in case the price is too high, I guess, it's an ERC token, their properties can be adjusted on the run, but it would be against the original design and intended use.
