this, also the financial climate is now different, older generations could live comfortably off one persons income, whilst buying a house, x2 cars and 3 kids all simultaneously. I mean fuck houses were like 10% of the price they are now (my dad bought his first house outright with acres of land, he came from a poor working class family, ahem, OUTRIGHT!).

The economic situation now is in my opinion considerably worse than it was 50 years ago, its been engineered for people to be in a perpetual cycle of debt, and what slots into that debt is finance. So why buy a brand new car (or second hand one for that matter!) when you can get it on finance, have it some years and trade it in for a newer model with a small adjustment to the policy. Also many of these policies incorporate breakdown cover with a cover car, and not to mention paying a monthly outgoing is healthy for the credit rating.

Buying cars is a really dumb use of money. You're not just losing the money spent on the car, but also the opportunity cost of the money going toward the car would be better used investing which would actually make you money. Anyway, electric bikes are the way to go imho (I don't have one, but I would if I could afford one)
