Your experience will depend on where you live man. An apartment in Brooklyn can be anywhere from 1500 minimum for a studio apt. In a non crime infested neighborhood to 15000 a month.

The only thing offensive or interesting about it is the smell. Culturally its sterile, a cheap imitation of its former self. I'm not even an anti-city person, I grew up in Chicago (itself a kind of off-brand miniature imitation of New York but with better food).

New Yorkers are really sensitive and very self important. Sometimes the self importance is warranted but mostly its not. A startling number of people live in New York just so they can say they live in New York, and basically all they do is order take-out and watch Netflix every night.

As for OP, for neighborhoods in Manhattan, east of Broadway gets really ethnic, really fast. There are a few exceptions to this: Gramercy and Kips Bay stay relatively white while being on the east side. Same with the East Village. Harlem is full of black people all the way across the island.
