It won’t be as bad for the average person as last time, because the economic crisis was centered around the housing crisis which directly affected the average citizen. We will feel the effects for sure, but it was particularly bad in 2008 due to foreclosures, wages being garnished, etc.

How bad it will be depends primarily on how governments react to it. If they react with a fiscal stimulus and sustain it until the private sector regains its strength, it won't be bad at all - indeed there may not even be a recession. But if they try to balance the budget (aka Hoovernomics) we're all screwed.
