From my perspective and knowledge, There are ways to advance spiritually but religions hide it and discourage it for purely selfish and power struggle reasons. This is why I have so much hate for them, They actively try to make people uninformed. The majority of them are jews from Christianity, Catholicism, Judaism and Islam so all the xianist religions. Buddhism has a better grasp on the fundementals but has been infected with new age teachings therefore not reliable. Some turn out good, some have to be revisited. It is the cycle of things.
