Personally id go for the new AWD Mazda 3 over the corolla. I own one of the older gens and it is a much nicer car all around than the Corolla is. The civic is also a good alternative.

1- Dave Ramsey. Checkout his YouTube videos. The wrong car WILL make you broke. Don’t buy too much. I did in 2008 and it red pilled me hard because it dug me in a hole good. It was a good car that gave me many trouble free miles, but I really couldn’t afford it at the time.
2- Took it (2008 Chevy Aveo) to 218,000 iirc until there was an accident. I would still be driving it due to the red pill. I was looking forward to 500,000 miles. Property taxes were like $17/year. Life has other plans for me. I can recommend this car. It served me well. Your experience may vary. I miss that car.

4- I got my Chevy Spark for $9798 brand new. It white, crank windows, auto tranny, speakers only at the front, etc. but it paid for. It cost less than first year depreciation on a 50k trap. Worst part about the car is the US market doesn’t offer the 1.0L 3-cylinder engine that gets 66mpg. Instead I got some gas guzzling 4 banger that does 38-49mpg. Lol It is a global car not a US market only car.
5- Mitsubishi Mirage is another cheap car.
6- Don’t put yourself in a hole. Fix what you got if able. Sometimes it is the cheaper route.
