If you need foodstamps that are only available because McDonalds pays their fair share, then you'll vote in favor of policies that empower McDonalds. Paying more taxes is like owning more shares of the government and having more control over everyone else. Donating extra money to the IRS doesn't work because nobody knows that you made the payment besides the IRS, who keeps their mouth shut and hands the money to the government to lose and spend poorly. When you can expicitly put a law on file that says anyone making x amount must pay y%, you've got an eternal receipt. And then you can still work around to find tax loopholes so you can pay less while still claiming that you are paying with the highest tax bracket just to be extra petty.
