Top link wallets got sent small amounts of HYPE and AMB. Was this dusting or just shitcoin promotions? If it was dusting how exactly does it work? Surely the shitcoins just sit in the wallets forever? Theyre too small to sell.

Curious myself, whats the point of dusting? Its not like they can get to the funds, specially if they are stored using a hardware wallet.

I don't get it.
1. I don't get how if you have two wallets, how dusting would show they're connected when you make a TX from one of them.
2. More importantly, I don't understand how if they know two wallets are owned by the same person, how they can figure out who owns the wallets.

Yea I had an odd transaction where I had some LTC dust dropped into my exodus wallet. I don't really care honestly I only have a very low amount of XMR left in there.

It’s not an attack on you, it’s a way to launder digital money, you send small amounts to a lot of wallet, so that when authorities will try to track them it would be really hard to see the destination of the dust if many random people get a free airdrop

Dusting is a confusing concept and I don't think it's as big of a deal as people make it out to be. From what I heard, a 3rd party wallet software website exasperated a lot of it.

Imagine if you could spend a few dollars to get insight into the balances and exchange activity of every wells fargo bank customer. You could anticipate stock market moves, learn something about income distributions, get wage data from the source, etc. This is whats being done with dusting attacks. Only with crypto it's not restricted to one bank. Whether it's cartels, govt, or both doesn't matter. giving your kyc info to nearly anonymous exchanges and govt's simply puts a target on your back. there is no way to avoid it besides using private email, transactions, and crypto that keeps your balance a secret.

Most people don't know how to split UTXOs of an address or do manual transactions. It might actually be fun to obtain seriously tainted coins and then send them to key players and accuse them of money laundering.

I think most likely it is just advertising, they send you a small amount and you look into it. There was also discussion threads on biz when it happened a few months ago.

This. Nobody ever seems to have an answer to “Why cant they just track your wallet from the explorer if they already have the address?” and “How exactly does dusting facilitate doxing?”.

It could be some kind of notification type service, that tags the address. How would that even work? Askin the wrong guy, pal.

If it did work that way, it would need a special kind of smart contract that can listen to an address and when that address does something, it immediately calls back to the smart contract. This could require some kind of exploit to ethereum's blockchain. It's probably just PJ's airdropping their shitcoin everywhere though.

again, you can just use the fucking explorer. there is no need to send dust. dust has other purposes

dust attacks are nothing. they're just entered into a database, then once they're spent, note is taken of where it came from and to whom it was sent. over time you can (maybe) match these addresses with people and organisations, and knowing their balance, you know whether it's worth doxxing, phishing or showing up at that person's house with a gun. if you're poor it won't happen, if you're not a dumbass you won't install the "hot girl.png.exe" you're mailed. nobody here is getting dust attacked.

That was my thoughts. I got a load of some chinese garbage $0 token a while ago. Checked it, and they had sent out the same amount to around 50,000 wallets which I assume is just a marketing move. "what the fuck is this and why should I care" type deal.
