All the people that compromise on salary eventually reach their 30s-40s with nothing to show for it. They spend their entire paychecks every weekend.
Ideally you wouldn't compromise but you could always work in a shit place and rack up savings/experience and once you get out you'll be ahead of the rest.

Depends on the cost of living. For me, a great city would just be lower population in some flyover area with a lower crime rate. A shitty city would be LA or San Fran (high crime rate, opoid epidemic, insane cost of living, lots of competition...etc). Fact is that unless you're a wiz kid who started programming at the age of 10 you're never gonna make it in silicon valley now or even NYC of LA for that matter. Be the big fish in the smaller pond, user. You don't wanted to get mogged by the big fish in the big sea

I'll interpret it as "shitty city" means bigger but with the typical shit like brown masses and crime and "great city" means smaller city but all white and clean and orderly.

Always go for the money. You can always use the money to make the downsides of a shit city more bearable. Also shit bigger cities have both nice and bad zones, you just have to choose not to live in the shittiest zones.

I guess as you get older you want more safety and stability, so I may be biased because I'm a young guy.
