Ran a video game server. Garry's Mod mainly. Only investment was time. Takes 100 hours a week at first but then becomes 7 hours a week. You work each day no matter what, but 1 hour a day is not a big deal. Need basic understanding of programming and Lua. That's it. What's good is that Garry's Mod supplies you with everything. You just program it to how you want it to work. On top of that, you're able to add content from other games without repercussions. Rockstar has to make parody vehicles because they'll get sued otherwise, but in Garry's Mod you can add anything because the law doesn't apply to it. It does, but no one cares, so you can add vehicles from Forza and everything is already made for you. Plus, you can earn money from it. Instead of making your own game where the risk is so high and you need to do everything yourself. On top of all the legal things.

People I knew wanted me to make a server and community since I was the least mentally ill out of everyone. They donated for a server which was $60 a month and after the first month it became self sustaining. Only took $60, not even my own, and only one person has to donate a month to keep it running. Pays for itself, easily. Everything after that is your money. Out of 60 players it's trivial to get one to donate each month. I quit a little after Garry's Mod 13 came out, but that was the peak in respect to making money. Developers had to remake their entire gamemode since old code was useless. This took months and lots of people failed because they didn't know how to code to begin with because they just ended up copy and pasting.

My code required minimal changes to adhere to the new update because I did it right the first time and I knew what everything did since it was my code. This shot me to the top. Had 8 servers running and they were always full and had people waiting in queue to join.

Income was around $21,200 a month but it changed. The minimum was like $15,000 when my servers got DDoS'd daily by neckbeards who were jealous of my shekels. Required a PayPal Business account though, not like it matters. They're also donations so no refunds and you don't have to "deliver" anything. :) Used to charge $10 for people to get unbanned just to ban them again.

I don't play video games anymore but I'll never understand why people spend so much money on pixels. Then again, if they're happy to give me money, I don't care. Not my job to be philosophical and a therapist. Then I also made like $3,000 a month from various things that stemmed from it. Helped me learn a lot about life and business. The community is really weird, however, but it's entertaining if you don't let it get to you. The drama is unbelievable. Had another server owner try to attack me and poach members but then he got exposed for being a pedophile and the community shut down.

One guy I know sold an addon for servers for like $30 a piece and made enough money to pay for school and get a house.

It also made me love rich people A LOT because I realized who the "good" people were. Now I have a deep resentment for poor people which I thought I never would. Every day some hobo would ask me to give a little discount on the price, I had tiers you could donate, $100 was the highest and you got a bunch of useless pixels for it. Never had a problem with rich people. They were like $100? Cool. Hope you add more things to buy later on, bro! Poor people were like c'mon man let me get the $10 tier for $5 bro please.

Learned myself. It doesn't take much. You need basic understanding of programming and knowledge of Lua. Very easy but takes time if you want to add lots of features. The stress is from DDoS, DMCA, and Doxing. Once you get used to it you're fine. Lots of people give up because of how dirty it is, but it's clearly worth it if people are working this hard at is. Most communities hide how much they make because they want people to keep donating to "keep the server alive" and garbage like that.

I heard Minecraft made significantly more. Big servers were making like $100,000 a month until Mojang changed their policy and stopped allowing that. I think even Tinder makes like a billion a year and they don't have to "do" anything. They just monetize women. Or a, mostly terrible, website like this one still somehow manages to stay up without issue. How? It's always up and as far as I know, no one is paying for it. Unless everyone secretly bought a Pass.

These things make so much money it's not even funny. They just keep it secret. When I was part of it, there was a site called CoderHire where you could sell Garry's Mod addons and they had a sales counter at the bottom of the page. Each sale they took a cut and they were up to like $20,000,000 in sales if I'm not mistaken. Until the IRS came after the owner and it shut down. I don't even know how there's $20,000,000 worth of value in selling addons for a $10 video game, but there you go. Then again look at how much people spend on Fortnite each month.
