>tfw fell for the STEM meme >biochemistry, working 20-25 hours a week in a research lab unpaid, no class credit >for my Japanese language class my partner is a turbo Chad going for a fine arts degree >tfw he will probably make more money than me
The only reason I chose to go into STEM was so I can at least have autonomy over my work, but now I just want to die because I am going to be poor.
Don't cry for me bro, worry about yourself first. What do you think your options are? Your biochemistry Bachelor's only qualifies you for the most menial of monkey work, think standing 8 hours preparing thousands Petri dishes every day for $12/hr in a high cost-of-living area, competing with Pajeets that all have Master's. Your alternatives are basically
1. Continue the schoolcuck path like I am and eventually get an ~80th percentile wage job in your 30s 2. Get a teaching degree, teach public school kids and try not to kys 3. Try to wing some kind of government/police analytical job in a place where few want to live 4. Get a job outside of your field of study
Joseph Miller
Because that isn't good enough for jobs. Duh
Carter Myers
you seriously didn't know that STEM really just means T and E? lol chemcuck
Bentley Gray
Just be a teacher. Easy as shit job. 4 months off basically too. Anyone who says teaching is a "hard job" is a dumbass. Kids aren't that bad. For profit jobs are a trillion times worse
Lincoln Richardson
I think when people say "STEM" they really mean "CS."
Lincoln Myers
And only some Es are good
Carson Morgan
I wouldn't mind being a teacher, seems like a chill job. I mention you just walk into class, shoot the shit with the students a lil bit. Regurgitate basic shit all day, maybe have them do assignments in class as groups or pop in a movie.
I-I was hoping I could at least get a masters if I fail at getting a phd. Worst case scenario I will just become a teacher.
John Parker
it is if u become smart enuff. too bad u wont
Aiden Thompson
>Japanese class >anime image >loser nerd
Just lol
Daniel Ramirez
It's the only socialization I get ;_;...even if it's just forced basic sentences.
>skate through civil engineering degree >barely graduate with GPA above 2.0 >get cushy job at contracting firm >spend day chatting with bosses and construction workers on site >barely do the minimum to keep the job
Connor Morales
>autonomy over your work You do realize that with rare exceptions, there's no such thing as freelancing, or free creativity as a chemist or engineer. You literally just work on projects that other people put on your shoulders.
William Ramirez
stay mad faggot its all about personality
Matthew Barnes
I'm not even mad user, you're a loser just like me.
I got a CS degree and I still ended up a worthless shutin NEET. You'd think there would be some way to make money from home with these skills but I just don't know what to do.
you should just get a job, they tell you what to make
Brody Sullivan
As someone with a biochem bachelor's degree that entered the job market just after the great recession, the outlook is not that bleak.
Look up CMOs/CROs in your region. Plenty of them start around $15/hr for high-school diploma tier hires even in low cost of living areas just to be QC or manufacturing techs. Many have R&D either separate or attached to Quality that deal with process development and analytical method support which is probably the best area. These companies work on client-contract basis and get to play with IP from startups trying to launch new drugs. Drug Discovery is a meme that will drive you insane trying to maintain funding. Optimizing processes for yield and potency is way easier.
And avoid working for Universities, because many states put pressure on them to keep staff levels at a minimum for the least pay they can get away with.
Cameron Morris
But then I'd have to leave my house and interact with people.
They don't care about how outgoing you are. I know married fathers with IT jobs. They are happily married with decent money, but they are almost always quiet and slightly autistic.
Bentley Nguyen
I feel sorry for STEMbugs, they fall for a meme they have no passion for I hope you follow your dreams OP
Done with all my classes and everything, just struggling to write my dissertation now. I keep coming on Jow Forums to procrastinate, but it feels hopelessly mixed up. I just want to be done at this point.
