If you can get spot, do it. Another route is to buy all the "starter packs" from the reputable dealers online...should be about 10oz at spot. Then spend whatever you have left on ASEs or bars or whatever you like.
Junk silver is also a possibility, but I don't know enough about it. Hopefully someone can chime in on why it is or isn't a good idea.

Hit all the online places and buy all their at spot starter packs. Then spend a grand on constitutional silver or as the call it "junk silver" Make sure you only get the 90% not the 40% shit. Then use the rest towards American Silver Eagles. That setup for just starting out is your best setup.

no matter the size of the company you shouldn't blindly trust them to just give you their silver. i remember hearing about banks trying to trick other banks by sending fake gold to them.
