I want to use the money within 18months to make it grow bigger, would be a waste to let it sit there for 1.5 years isn't it?

Probably the thing I already do, buy poorly leveraged oil and gas stocks forcing me to hold a 70% paper loss for 4-5years before selling for a solid 10% gain.
